Australian-British multinational mining, metals and petroleum company BHP signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Toyota Australia to enhance safety and implement decarbonization measures within BHP's Australian operation.
The MOU aims to create engineering and product development teams focused on safety in light-vehicle design and emerging technologies, according to BHP's announcement released on Thursday.
Under the collaboration, the companies will join forces to lower BHP's vehicle operation emissions in line with the company’s climate target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 30% by 2030.
'At the heart of our efforts to decarbonize our operations is an ambition to electrify our fleet of 5,000 light vehicles in Australia,' BHP President Australia, Geraldine Slattery, was quoted as saying in the statement.
'Collaborating with leading suppliers like Toyota shows our clear commitment to developing shared solutions for a safer and more sustainable future,' she added.
Once completed, the partnership's capabilities are expected to serve as a model for other organizations looking to securely electrify their light-vehicle fleets and aid in the reduction of carbon emissions.
