Costa Rica has been running on renewable energy sources including hydro and geothermal power since the new year, according to the the state-run Costa Rican Electricity Institute.
The Central American country does not use fossil fuels because it aims to have a clean environment and is able to generate all of its electricity needs from hydroelectric power and geothermal energy.
Heavy rainfall was successful in powering four hydroelectric power plants for the first three months of the year, the institute said.
Last year 80 percent of the country's energy came from hydropower while 10 percent was generated from geothermal sources.
Up to December 2014, 94 percent of Costa Rica's energy demand was met through renewables but since the beginning of 2015, the country has been using only renewables for electricity generation.
The government of the small Central American country, with a population of 4.8 million, actively promotes renewable energy including geothermal projects in the country.
