Brussels briefing, July 22

Outgoing European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker will visit Malta on Monday and Tuesday. He is expected to hold talks with Prime Minister Joseph Muscat at Castille as well as meeting Malta’s President George Vella. 

On Monday, the Chairperson of the Single Resolution Board (SRB) Elke König will speak at the European Parliament’s (EP) Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs. 

Tuesday will see the Commissioner for Trade Cecilia Malmström exchanging views with Members of the EP’s Committee on International Trade.

On Wednesday, the EP’s Committee on Foreign Affairs will debate recent developments in Ethiopia, Sudan, South Sudan and Moldova.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, Ministers will outline the priorities of the Finnish Presidency of the EU Council of Ministers to parliamentary committees. Finland is holding the Presidency of the Council until the end of 2019.

These will take place in a series of meetings, namely in the committees on Transport and Tourism, Employment and Social Affairs, Regional Development, Industry, Research and Energy, Environment and Public Health as well as Development.

 From Tuesday to Thursday, the EP’s committees on Culture and Education, Environment and Public Health, as well as Agriculture and Rural Development, will elect their vice-chairs for a two-and-a-half-year mandate. 

The European Central Bank will announce its interest rate decision on Thursday.
