Brussels briefing, June 24

 The EU’s General Affairs Council will meet in Luxembourg on Tuesday for discussions in a public session on the cohesion policy’s legislative package for the period 2021-2027.

The Transport, Telecommunications and Energy Council will meet in Luxembourg on Tuesday to discuss energy-related issues. The ministers will be invited to adopt Council conclusions on the future of energy systems in the Energy Union. In addition, the European Commission will inform ministers on recent international energy events and activities, which will be followed by an exchange of views on external energy relations.

On Wednesday, the EU’s Environment Council will meet in Luxembourg where EU ministers will be invited to agree on a general approach to regulation on water reuse. Furthermore, the environment ministers will discuss single-use plastics and the next common action steps to combat marine litter.

Meetings of the North Atlantic Council (NAC) at Defense Minister level will be held at the NATO Headquarters in Brussels on Wednesday and Thursday.  Defense Minister Hulusi Akar will represent Turkey at the meetings. 

The EU-Morocco Association Council and EU-Montenegro Stabilization and Association Council will meet in Brussels on Thursday.  

Turkey's Agriculture and Forestry Minister Bekir Pakdemirli will visit Brussels to meet with the EU’s Health and Food Safety Commissioner Vytenis Andriukaitis on Thursday. He will also participate in an EU-Turkey high-level agricultural dialogue on Friday. Agriculture and Rural Development Commissioner Phil Hogan will represent the EU in these discussions.

G20 leaders will meet in Osaka on Friday and Saturday as Japan holds the G20 presidency for the first time. European Council President Donald Tusk will represent the EU at the summit along with the President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker. 

EU leaders will gather on Sunday for a summit in Brussels where they will continue negotiations on nominations for high-level EU positions.
