More than 3,000 politicians and business people from 100 countries participated in about 400 sessions in the Davos World Economic Forum last week.
Subjects such as China, U.S. President Donald Trump, Brexit and rising populism dominated the summit. While Trump proposes protectionism, Chinesse President Xi Jinping defended globalization in his first address in Davos.
About 30 world leaders attended the summit, including U.N. Secretary General Antonio Guterres, World Trade Organization General Director Roberto Azevedo and IMF chief Christine Lagarde.
Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Mehmet Simsek participated in the forum and spoke on the country’s constitution change, the state of the Turkish economy, Syria and the July 15 coup attempt during various sessions.
- EP
European Parliament Committee Meetings will take place in Brussels. International Trade Committee MEPs will vote on whether or not to approve the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) negotiated with Canada on Tuesday. The full house will vote on the trade agreement in February. The CETA can only enter into force with the MEPs' approval.
Parliament's Special Committee on Emission Measurements in the car sector (EMIS) will continue its inquiry by hearing representatives of car manufacturer Audi AG, part of the Volkswagen Group on Tuesday.
Maltese Ministers will present the priorities of the Council Presidency in a series of meetings with committees on Monday through to Thursday.
- Eurogroup
Eurogroup will meet on Thursday to discuss the progress achieved to date in the ongoing second review of Greece's economic adjustment program, based on updates from the European institutions participating in the review. Ministers will also look into the implementation of the short-term debt relief measures which the Eurogroup endorsed at its meeting on Dec. 5, 2016.
- ECOFIN
Economic and Financial Affairs Council (ECOFIN) will meet in Brussels on Friday. The Council will be presided over by Malta until July 1, 2017. The presidency will present its program in the areas of economy and finance. Ministers will discuss topics such as value added tax: reverse charge mechanism and banking sector: the Basel Committee reform agenda in the council.
