Enel Green Power Chile, a subsidiary of Italian multinational energy company Enel, began construction of Chile's biggest solar photovoltaic (PV) plant, the company announced on Monday.
The Campos del Sol facility with approximately 382 megawatts of installed capacity will involve a total investment of around $320 million.
The plant is estimated to generate around 1,160 gigawatt-hours of electricity per year once operational by the end of 2020 and avoid more than 900,000 tons of carbon emissions.
The plant is innovative in that it will use one million bifacial PV panels, a technology that maximizes energy generation by capturing solar radiation from both sides of the panel, generating on average 12% more electricity than conventional modules.
