The Paris Agreement will enter into force for Turkey on Nov. 10, 2021, on the 30th day after the date of deposit of its instrument of ratification, according to the Depositary Notifications by the Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN) signed on Oct. 13, 2021.
The Turkish parliament ratified the agreement on Oct. 7 following the announcement of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan last month at the UN General Assembly that the country would ratify the Paris Agreement in October and adopt net zero emissions by 2053.
The UN said in the notification that Turkey's deposit on the ratification of the agreement came into effect on Oct. 11.
'The Republic of Turkey, on the basis of 'equity, common but differentiated responsibilities and respective capabilities' as clearly and accurately recognized under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change of 9 May 1992 and the Paris Agreement and by recalling decisions adopted by the Conference of the Parties to the Convention, declares that Turkey will implement the Paris Agreement as a developing country and in the scope of her nationally determined contribution statements, provided that the Agreement and its mechanisms do not prejudice her right to economic and social development,' the UN depositary notification said.
Turkey is now the last G20 country to ratify the Paris Agreement and will be one of its 192 parties by Nov. 10.
On Dec. 12, 2015, the parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change reached an agreement to fight climate change and achieve a sustainable low-carbon future at the UN Climate Change Conference (COP21) in Paris.
Turkey signed the agreement on April 22, 2016, in New York.
As the ratification of the agreement marks a new era in Turkey's climate policy, it is expected to update its commitments as a party to the agreement.
The Paris Agreement seeks to strengthen the global response to the threat of climate change by limiting global temperature rise by 1.5 degrees Celsius by halving emissions by 2030 and reaching net zero emissions by 2050.
