Offshore wind farm giant Orsted exits markets in Norway, Spain and Portugal

Exiting several offshore markets, Orsted says it will refocus activities in US

Leading offshore wind farm developer Orsted announced on Wednesday that it will be leaving the Norwegian, Spanish, and Portuguese markets and laying off 250 employees within the coming months.

Orsted plans to refocus on its US offshore wind energy strategy and said 250 employees will initially be made redundant within the coming months, but cuts to 600 to 800 positions globally will be made.

In a statement, the Danish company unveiled its business plan with the ambition of having 35–38 gigawatts of installed capacity by 2030 but added that it would exit several offshore markets “to reduce development costs and create further strategic market focus.”

This also entails deprioritizing development activities in Japan and planning for leaner development within floating offshore wind and the company’s P2X projects—renewable electricity from wind power.
