A Palestinian child was injured by Israeli army gunfire on Tuesday in the West Bank town of Salfit, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry.

The child, who Israeli authorities accuse of having attempted to attack Israeli soldiers deployed in the area, has since been taken to an Israeli hospital for treatment, the ministry said in a statement.

It added that the injured child was now undergoing surgery for his injury, without providing any additional details.

The incident comes amid ongoing demonstrations in the Palestinian territories to protest last week's decision by U.S. President Donald Trump to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

According to Palestine’s official statistics agency, 14 Palestinian children have been killed this year by Israeli forces in the occupied West Bank and the blockaded Gaza Strip.
