EU Commission head 'warmly' congratulates Trump on apparent US presidential victory
EU, US 'more than just allies,' Ursula von der Leyen says
ANKARA
The president of the EU Commission Wednesday “warmly” congratulated US Republican candidate Donald Trump on his apparent victory in Tuesday’s presidential elections.
“The EU and the US are more than just allies. We are bound by a true partnership between our people, uniting 800 million citizens,” Ursula von der Leyen said on X.
“So let's work together on a strong transatlantic agenda that keeps delivering for them,” she added.
Trump is currently ahead of Democratic candidate and Vice President Kamala Harris in the race to reach 270 Electoral College votes, the number needed to become president, having racked up 267, according to The Associated Press.
Fox News has already declared him the victor, and Trump himself has hailed his “magnificent victory.”
The win would make Trump the second US president to serve non-consecutive terms, following Grover Cleveland, who served two separate terms in the late 1800s, with President Benjamin Harrison in between.
