Eighteen people were killed in a traffic accident involving a bus and a truck in southwest Nigeria on Sunday, a local official said.

The crash on the busy Lagos-Ibadan highway in Ogun state happened when the truck attempted to overtake another vehicle, Babatunde Akinbiyi, a spokesman for the state traffic agency, said.

“Our men who were at work at the time said all the 18 passengers in the bus, including the driver, died immediately,” he told reporters.

The highway has been undergoing repairs for several years, resulting in traffic diversions that include narrow sections where overtaking is banned.
