King Mohammed VI will assign another member of the Justice and Development Party (JDP) to form a government after five months of failed talks, a Cabinet statement said late Wednesday.

Prime Minister Abdelilah Benkirane was tasked with creating a coalition in October following the JDP's election win. However, five months of consultations with other parties have failed to produce an agreement.

According to the statement, the king took the decision to appoint someone else to form an administration “in order to get past the current state of deadlock”.

The constitution does not explicitly state what steps should be taken in the event of a party being unable to form a government. Nor does it provide a specific deadline for doing so.
