African Union seeks unity amid integration challenges
Bloc aims to accelerate economic integration and financial stability
ACCRA, Ghana
African leaders gathered in Ghana on Sunday for the 6th African Union Mid-Year Coordination Meeting to address pressing issues hindering continental integration and to forge a unified front ahead of crucial global engagements.
Mauritanian President Mohamed Cheikh Ghazouani, the current African Union Chair, emphasized the urgent need to accelerate economic integration to bolster the continent and meet the aspirations of its citizens.
The meeting focused on securing funding for African Union projects, particularly as the organization heavily relies on external support.
African Union Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat stressed the importance of presenting a united African voice at international platforms like the G20, where the Union now holds membership.
"It is imperative that we speak with one voice at major global forums," Mahamat emphasized.
Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo, the AU Champion on Financial Institutions, called for the consolidation of development funding instruments to optimize resource allocation.
"By consolidating our development funding instruments, we can create a more cohesive and effective financial framework," Akufo-Addo stated.
He highlighted the establishment of the African Central Bank, the African Investment Bank, and the African Monetary Fund as crucial steps towards financial stability and economic integration.
However, challenges persist. Chairperson Mahamat acknowledged the underperformance of Regional Economic Communities (RECs) and the need to strengthen their effectiveness.
"Our RECs are not doing well. Their effectiveness, credibility, and weight in the general enterprise of unity have, unfortunately, been greatly eroded," he admitted.
The meeting takes place amidst regional instability in West Africa, with Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso facing potential membership suspension due to military coups and ongoing terrorist threats.
The African Union's ability to overcome these challenges and achieve its integration goals will be crucial in shaping the continent's future and its role on the global stage.
