The body of a Burundi police officer was found Monday morning near a church in the northern part of the capital Bujumbura, a police source said.

"The body of Col. Charles Ndihokubwayo was found in the courtyard of St. Joseph church in the Ngagara urban zone in Ntahangwa," Pierre Nkurikiye, national police spokesman, told Anadolu Agency.

He also said the victim's body showed marks of violence.

"The police have already opened an investigation to determine the circumstances of the crime," he added.

Charles Ndihokubwayo worked at the Higher Institute of Police in Mitakataka in Bubanza Province, northwest of Bujumbura.

In January, an army major was shot dead in the eastern part of the country.

Unrest in Burundi crisis started in April 2015 when Nkurunziza announced his candidacy for a controversial third term. The constitution allows two.

The crisis has led to the deaths of about 1,000 people and forced more than 300,000 to flee the country in the past two years, according to the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and the International Federation of Human Rights.
