Number of Ethiopian refugees in Sudan rises to 1,500

KHARTOUM

The number of refugees that have arrived in Sudan from Ethiopia has reached 1,500, the Khartoum-based Al-Shuruq satellite channel reported Thursday.

The channel said Ethiopian refugees have been facing tough humanitarian conditions following their decision to flee the Amhara region bordering Sudan.

The region has witnessed violent clashes between the Amhara and Tigray ethnic groups since November last year.

Last Friday, a Sudanese national was killed during the clashes. Recently, another 370 Ethiopians fled to Sudan due to the conflict.

The Sudanese police and army are trying to close the border to prevent the clashes from spreading to Sudan.
