South Sudan president urges calm after protests, looting of Sudanese businesses
‘Let us protect their properties and businesses, we are hospitable people, it’s our duty to offer protection and support to Sudanese refugees who fled the war in Sudan,’ Salva Kiir says

JUBA, South Sudan
South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir Mayardit urged calm Friday and an end to atrocities committed by the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) against South Sudanese civilians.
“I feel your pain and disdain at the atrocities against our fellow citizens in Sudan, and particularly what is taking place in Al Gezira State, Wad Madani. These inhumane barbaric killings of innocent South Sudanese civilians allegedly committed by the Sudanese Armed Forces ignite difficult, sad, and emotional memories. These heinous acts are unacceptable and are comparable only to terrorism in character.” Kiir said in an address to the nation.
He urged South Sudanese to remain calm and refrain from retaliation.
“It is crucial that we do not allow anger and emotions to cloud our judgment and turn against Sudanese brothers and sisters. Let us protect their properties and businesses, we are hospitable people, it’s our duty to offer protection and support to Sudanese refugees who fled the war in Sudan,” he said.
Gruesome videos circulating on social media earlier this week of South Sudanese killed in Wad Madani, the capital of Al Jazirah State, raised concern about the safety of thousands who have been stranded in the war-torn neighboring country.
Heavy gunfire erupted Thursday and security forces were deployed in South Sudan’s capital to stop angry youths from looting businesses owned by Sudanese nationals.
Reports indicated that Sudanese-owned businesses in neighborhoods across Juba had been vandalized and looted amid rising tensions.
The unrest follows protests by residents condemning the alleged killing of South Sudanese nationals in Sudan by the SAF.
