MOGADISHU

A foundation under Türkiye’s top religious body is distributing meat from sacrificial animals to the needy in Somalia to mark the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha.

The Turkish Diyanet Foundation (TDV) distributed 57,550 shares of sacrificial meat to 1 million needy families in 15 different locations.

It is customary for Muslims to give meat to the needy during the holiday.

Foundation officials and volunteers delivered the offerings that were entrusted by benefactors, to the needy.

Eid al-Adha, or the Feast of Sacrifice, is the second-most important Islamic holiday. It is celebrated in honor of the scriptural story of the Prophet Abraham who sacrificed a ram at God's command, instead of his son, Ishmael.

Today, it is observed through the slaughtering of livestock, with the meat shared among family, friends and the less fortunate.
