As US forces worked to recover downed American airmen inside Iran, President Donald Trump's advisers deliberately shielded him from real-time updates in the situation room, believing his impatience would hinder rather than help the operation, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing a senior administration official.
Aides briefed Trump only at key turning points. One airman was recovered quickly, but the president was not told the second had been successfully extracted until late Saturday -- averting what the Journal described as a potential low point of his presidency.
US CENTCOM, which is responsible for military operations in the Middle East, confirmed that two service members were recovered after their F-15E jet was downed by a shoulder-fired missile on April 2.
The episode reflected a broader pattern of improvised decision-making. After the rescue, Trump posted his Easter morning message threatening Iran and appending an Islamic phrase -- "Praise be to Allah" -- telling an adviser he wanted to come across as "as unstable and insulting as possible" to pressure Tehran into negotiations.
His threat that "a whole civilization will die tonight" was similarly unplanned, the Journal said, describing it as an improvised move rather than a product of any formal security process -- aimed, at its core, at frightening Iran into a deal.
Advisers have repeatedly urged Trump to cut back on unscripted media appearances, warning that his contradictory statements were eroding confidence in US strategy. The president has continued to split his attention between the war, midterm political fundraising and White House renovations, while the shadow of the 1979 Iran hostage crisis has weighed heavily on his thinking throughout the conflict, according to aides.
