WASHINGTON

American support for Israel has reached its lowest level in 25 years, with 46% expressing sympathy for the country, according to a Gallup poll released Thursday.

The poll found a five-point decline from last year’s 51% support for Israel, marking the lowest level since 2001.

Meanwhile, sympathy for the Palestinians rose to 33%, a six-point increase from last year and the highest level recorded in Gallup’s history.

The decline in support for Israel comes amid its deadly offensive in Gaza, which has killed over 48,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza health authorities.

The survey, conducted Feb. 3-16 among 1,004 adults, followed a ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement that began on Jan. 19.

Some 75% of Republicans back Israel compared to 21% of Democrats. Conversely, 59% of Democrats sympathize with Palestinians, nearly three times the Republican figure.

The poll also found that 55% of Americans support a two-state solution, with strong backing among Democrats (76%) and independents (53%), while 41% of Republicans favor the establishment of a Palestinian state.
