WASHINGTON

California Gov. Gavin Newsom greeted President Donald Trump on Friday as he arrived in Los Angeles for a tour of wildfire devastation.

"I appreciate the governor coming out and meeting me," Trump told reporters alongside Newsom after the political rivals shook hands.

"We are going to get it done. Tremendous numbers of lives have been affected. A lot of real estate has been affected. Nobody’s ever probably seen anything like this, you could almost say since the Second World War when you think of it.

"I mean, nothing like this has happened and we’re going to get it fixed so we’ll get it permanently fixed so that it can’t happen again. We’ll be talking a little bit later, and we’ll get it worked out," said Trump.

Newsom thanked Trump for visiting the state.

"We're going to need your support. We’re going to need your help. You were there for us during COVID. I don’t forget that, and I have all the expectations that we’ll be able to work together to get this speedy recovery," he said.

A fire on Wednesday was the latest to strike the greater Los Angeles area after a series of fires began sweeping through America's second-largest city Jan. 7.

The first inferno, the Palisades Fire, has devasted the upscale coastal community of the Pacific Palisades, while another major blaze, the Eaton Fire, tore through wide swathes of the foothill city of Altadena.

A total of 11 people were killed in the Palisades Fire while 17 died in the Eaton Fire amid mass devastation in both communities that has left many residents scrambling to find new homes.
