Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum agreed Friday to work in close coordination in a call ahead of an upcoming review of the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA).
Carney and Sheinbaum discussed opportunities to expand collaboration in critical minerals, clean technologies, energy and advanced manufacturing, and welcomed the signing of a memorandum of understanding on industrial health security and biomanufacturing to strengthen pharmaceutical supply chain resilience, according to a statement from the Prime Minister's Office.
He also welcomed Mexico's upcoming trade mission to Canada, led by Mexico's Economy Secretary Marcelo Ebrard, building on a successful Team Canada Trade Mission to Mexico earlier this year that produced more than 20 new commercial partnerships and agreements.
"The leaders agreed to work in close coordination to address shared economic priorities and challenges, and deliver greater certainty, security, and prosperity for their peoples," it said.
Carney also thanked Sheinbaum for Mexico's support following the tragic death of a Canadian at the Teotihuacan site near Mexico City earlier this week.
They also discussed the humanitarian situation in Cuba and looked forward to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by Canada, Mexico and the US, projected to contribute $2 billion to the Canadian economy, according to the statement.
