HAMILTON, Canada

US federal and local law enforcement officials raided the homes of pro-Palestine activists linked to the University of Michigan early Wednesday, according to a union group.

Several individuals were detained and questioned, and electronic devices and personal belongings were confiscated. The FBI, Michigan State Police and local police departments conducted the raids in Ann Arbor, Ypsilanti and Canton, reportedly at the request of Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel.

"In Ann Arbor, officers detained and questioned two activists, including a member of GEO, and confiscated their electronic devices. In Ypsilanti, officers detained and released four individuals," said a statement by the Graduate Employees' Organization (GEO), a graduate student workers union.

"In Canton, officers raided one residence. The officers also confiscated personal belongings from multiple residences and at least two cars," it added.

GEO said law enforcement officials were hesitant to provide search warrants or explain the reasons behind the raids.

The group added that no injuries were reported and no visa holders were known to be affected.

"We strongly condemn the actions taken today and all past and present repression of political activism," said the group, as it demanded accountability from university officials and the attorney general.

Police in Ypsilanti, meanwhile, confirmed its presence via social media post. "The Ypsilanti Police Department (YPD) was made aware that the FBI and Michigan State Police would be conducting a search warrant at a location on Summit this morning. Immigration is not involved. YPD has been brought in to secure the scene, given that a crowd has assembled," it said.

Requests for comment from the FBI and Nessel's office were not immediately returned.
