Jeffrey Maddrey, the former chief of the New York City Police Department, was suspended Thursday because of a federal investigation into allegations of misconduct during his tenure.

"Maddrey was suspended from the Department this morning, as law enforcement agents executed search warrants at several locations, including his residence," Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch wrote on X.

Tisch confirmed that the NYPD's Internal Affairs Bureau is cooperating closely with federal law enforcement authorities to examine the allegations.

But it is unclear what the suspension means since Maddrey resigned last month after Lieut. Quathisha Epps, a former subordinate, accused him of coercing her into a sexual relationship in exchange for workplace benefits such as overtime pay.

Epps claimed that Maddrey retaliated when she refused further advances, prompting an investigation into her overtime records.

Maddrey’s attorney denied the allegations, insisting that the relationship was consensual and unrelated to workplace privileges.

Epps, the NYPD’s top earner in fiscal year 2024, reportedly earned more than $400,000, more than half of which came from overtime pay.

The allegations against Maddrey have raised concerns about broader accountability issues within the NYPD, particularly in light of Maddrey's history of disciplinary problems, including a prior investigation into an affair with another subordinate.
