WASHINGTON

Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter was hospitalized in Canada for dehydration "as a precaution", his organization said Thursday.

Non-profit homebuilding group Habitat for Humanity said on Twitter that Carter, 92, was hospitalized in Winnipeg. He had collapsed while helping to build a home after working in the summer sun for about an hour, Canadian media reported.

"President Carter told us he is okay and is being taken offsite for observation," Habitat said.

Carter has long been involved with Habitat for Humanity's work and, along with his wife Rosalynn Carter, sponsors the annual Carter Work Project.
