US authorities lifted a shelter-in-place order at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts on Sunday after police responded to reports of gunfire at a nearby subway station, NBC reported.
The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority Police (MBTA Transit Police) said they were called to Harvard Square T station at 2.12 p.m. local time (1812GMT), following a report that a man had fired several shots on the southbound platform before fleeing the scene. Investigators believe the suspect targeted an individual but did not hit anyone.
Harvard University issued a campus alert urging students and staff to shelter in place while police searched the area. The alert warned people to remain indoors until further notice.
Cambridge, Harvard and MBTA police were involved in the search, which ended about 20 minutes later.
A second alert from the university said the shelter-in-place order had been lifted.
