A California man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for participating in the Jan. 6, 2021 assault on the US Capitol marking one of the longest sentences given in connection with the incident.

A statement on Friday by the US Capitol Police noted that David Nicholas Dempsey had pleaded guilty in January to two counts of "assaulting, resisting, or impeding officers with a deadly weapon."

"David Dempsey was one of the most violent participants and at times led parts of the assaults on multiple officers who were protecting the Capitol that day," the statement quoted US Capitol Police Chief J. Thomas Manger as saying.
