Hollywood actor Mark Ruffalo and musician Bruce Springsteen have endorsed Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed ahead of Tuesday's US midterm elections in the state of Michigan.
Ruffalo urged voters to support El-Sayed in a campaign video, saying he was proud to stand behind the candidate and urging voters to make their voices heard at the ballot box.
"I just want you to know how proud I am to support Abdul El-Sayed," said Ruffalo. "I'm asking you to join me in supporting him on Tuesday."
Ruffalo, who was born in Kenosha, Wisconsin, said he valued the "working class values" he associated with his hometown, including family, work, community and investing in the next generation.
"That's also why I'm supporting Abdul," he said. "He understands that government should work for everybody."
Ruffalo also encouraged voters to speak with family and friends and urge them to participate in the election.
"We have a chance to do that, and we have a chance to revolutionize the Democratic Party," he said.
Springsteen endorsed El-Sayed in a social media post that described the Democratic candidate as a defender of the Constitution and democracy.
"Dr. El-Sayed is a fighter for our American Constitution, he's a fighter for our American Democracy, and he's a fighter against the corrupt, lawless, and anti-American leadership currently in the White House," wrote Springsteen. "That's why I'm in his corner 100%."
El-Sayed, 42, is running against Republican candidate Mike Rogers for Michigan's open US Senate seat. He defeated former US Rep. Haley Stevens in the Democratic primary on Aug. 4 and is seeking to become the first Muslim US senator if elected.
The Michigan race is among contests that could help determine control of the narrowly divided Senate.
El-Sayed, a former Wayne County health director and epidemiologist, has campaigned on issues including healthcare, affordability and expanding the social safety net. Rogers, a former congressman, is presenting himself as a conservative candidate focused on manufacturing and border security.
