Palestine condemns Venezuela ‘coup attempt’

RAMALLAH, Palestine

The Palestinian Foreign Ministry on Thursday condemned what has been described as a “coup attempt” against Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.

In a statement, the ministry voiced its concern over recent events in the troubled South American country, going on to decry what it described as “interference by certain countries in Venezuela’s internal affairs”.

“Certain parties have intervened directly by supporting a coup attempt against democratically elected President Nicolas Maduro,” the statement read.

The ministry also expressed its solidarity with Venezuela's “legitimate aspirations for greater stability, unity and prosperity through comprehensive and peaceful national dialogue”.

It went on to praise Venezuela “and its legitimate president” for their “past support for the Palestinian people and cause”.

On Wednesday, Juan Guaido, leader of Venezuela’s opposition-led National Assembly, declared himself acting president.

Since then, several countries -- including the U.S., Canada, Brazil and Columbia -- have declared their support for Guaido.
