WASHINGTON

The top two US Democratic congressional leaders endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for president on Tuesday.

"Now that the process has played out … we are here today to throw our support behind Vice President Kamala Harris," Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer told reporters alongside House of Representatives Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.

Biden announced his decision Sunday not to seek reelection Nov. 5 and offered his "full support and endorsement" for Harris to be the nominee of the Democratic Party.

Harris secured enough delegate endorsements on Monday to win the Democratic presidential nomination.

Biden’s decision to endorse Harris is not binding, as delegates are free to vote for a candidate of their choice.

The Democratic National Convention is set to convene in Chicago from Aug. 19 - 22.
