Survey reveals surge in Canadian patriotism following Trump's tariff threat

A new survey has found a significant boost in Canadian patriotism, coinciding with a recent tariff threat on Canadian goods by US President Donald Trump.

The Angus Reid Institute survey revealed that the proportion of Canadians who feel "very proud" of their country has climbed from 34% to 44% since December. Similarly, those reporting a "deep emotional attachment to Canada" increased from 49% to 59%.

The surge in national pride comes as Trump fulfilled an election campaign promise and signed an executive order to impose a 25% tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico and a 10% tariff on imports from China.

Canada, in a swift response, announced a 25% levy on US imports.

After a telephone conversation with Trump, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that the US paused the tariffs for 30 days.

The tariff talks, however, have spurred calls for stronger economic independence.

As 95% of respondents expressed support for eliminating inter-provincial trade barriers to boost the domestic flow of goods, 80% emphasized the necessity of building a cross-country oil and gas pipeline.

"Nine in 10 Canadians say they are following this issue (tariff threat) closely. This includes the largest portion seen in 10 years saying they are following it 'very closely' – 56%," said the survey.

Additionally, 91% of Canadians expressed a desire to reduce a reliance on US trade, favoring economic diversification and self-reliance versus restoring past trade relations.
