US President Donald Trump criticized The Wall Street Journal Editorial Board on Wednesday for opposing his auto tariffs, claiming that they would benefit the economy and manufacturing in the state of Michigan.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump rejected the newspaper's analysis, saying: “They are so wrong, in fact, it is just the opposite. The tariffs will drive massive amounts of auto manufacturing to Michigan, a state which I just easily won in the Presidential Election.”

Trump said Monday that tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico "will go forward" as a month-long pause ends next week, after a temporary suspension agreed upon Feb. 3 to address his concerns about border security and drug trafficking.

The Wall Street Journal published an opinion piece Tuesday claiming that Trump’s threatened tariffs could severely damage the US auto industry, as American plants rely on parts from Canada and Mexico, with a new analysis by the Anderson Economic Group highlighting the potential tariff risks.

Trump stated his auto tariffs have already stopped numerous new auto plants from being built in other countries, calling it a “gigantic win.”

Calling out The Wall Street Journal, he said: “They come to my aid when I least expect it, and I greatly appreciate that, but then they come out with some real clinkers, like today’s editorial that my auto tariffs will hurt the Michigan automobile business.”

“For Michigan and the United States as a whole. American industry will thrive, and we will make America great again,” Trump added.
