Trump pushes ‘America First’ agenda with key picks
President-elect, set to take office on Jan. 20, announces picks for strategic ambassadorial and administrative posts
ISTANBUL
US President-elect Donald Trump unveiled a series of high-profile appointments Tuesday night on Truth Social, signaling his administration’s focus on strengthening diplomatic ties, reshaping regulatory frameworks, and advancing his "America First" agenda.
These appointments highlight Trump’s commitment to pursuing an assertive diplomatic, regulatory, and economic strategy as he prepares to take office on Jan. 20, in a matter of weeks.
With a mix of loyal allies and seasoned professionals, Trump’s picks reflect his administration’s priorities of asserting US interests globally and overhauling domestic policy frameworks.
Kimberly Guilfoyle envoy to Greece
Among the most notable picks was Kimberly Guilfoyle, nominated to be US ambassador to Greece.
Guilfoyle, a longtime Trump ally and prominent fundraiser, was praised by Trump for her qualifications: "For many years, Kimberly has been a close friend and ally. Her extensive experience and leadership in law, media, and politics along with her sharp intellect make her supremely qualified to represent the United States, and safeguard its interests abroad."
Trump also stressed her potential to strengthen US-Greek relations: "Kimberly is perfectly suited to foster strong bilateral relations with Greece, advancing our interests on issues ranging from defense cooperation to trade and economic innovation."
Ronald Johnson to Mexico
Trump also nominated Ronald (Ron) Johnson for the post of US ambassador to Mexico.
Johnson, who served as ambassador to El Salvador during Trump’s first term, is a decorated former Green Beret and CIA operative with a Master of Strategic Intelligence from the National Intelligence University.
Trump lauded Johnson’s record: "Ron will work closely with our great Secretary of State Nominee, Marco Rubio, to promote our Nation’s security and prosperity through strong America First Foreign Policies. During my First Term, Ron served as the Ambassador to El Salvador, where he worked tirelessly with Salvadoran authorities and our team to reduce violent crime and illegal migration to the lowest levels in History."
Trump concluded his announcement with a pledge: "Together, we will put an end to migrant crime, stop the illegal flow of Fentanyl and other dangerous drugs into our Country and, MAKE AMERICA SAFE AGAIN!"
Key regulatory and administrative roles
Trump also announced appointees for key regulatory and administrative roles: Andrew Ferguson as chairman of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and Mark Meador as an FTC commissioner.
Trump hailed Ferguson’s credentials: "Andrew has a proven record of standing up to Big Tech censorship, and protecting Freedom of Speech in our Great Country." He added that Ferguson would be "the most America First, and pro-innovation FTC Chair in our Country’s History."
Additionally, Trump named Dan Bishop as deputy director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) and Ed Martin as OMB chief of staff.
Describing Bishop as "a tireless fighter for our MAGA Movement," Trump said he would drive a deregulatory agenda and combat the "Weaponized Deep State." He characterized Martin as "a winner who will help Make America Great Again!"
Jacob Helberg to senior State Department post
Reflecting the administration’s focus on technological and economic competition, Trump appointed Jacob Helberg undersecretary of state for economic growth, energy, and the environment.
Helberg, a staunch critic of China and TikTok, the Chinese-owned app which is slated to be banned in the US unless it is sold, previously served on the US-China Economic Security Review Commission.
Trump praised Helberg’s expertise: "Jacob is a successful technology executive, has the knowledge, expertise, and pragmatism to defend America’s Economic interests abroad, and always puts AMERICA FIRST!"
Helberg, an advocate of economic statecraft, has referred to TikTok as a "Chinese weapon of war." Despite previous affiliations with other Republican figures, Helberg has become a significant Trump supporter, contributing heavily to his campaign and related super PACs.
Following the announcement, Helberg took to X, writing: "The State Department will play a critical role in acting on this vision. I look forward to earning the support of the US Senate and working with @MarcoRubio to implement President Trump’s agenda."
