WASHINGTON

US President Donald Trump said Monday that all leaders of the G7 group of nations voiced their desire to see Russia's now over three-year war on Ukraine brought to a close.

Posting on his proprietary social media website after the leaders concluded their call to mark the war's third anniversary, Trump said "everyone expressed their goal of seeing the War end."

"And I emphasized the importance of the vital “Critical Minerals and Rare-Earths Deal” between the United States and Ukraine, which we hope will be signed very soon!" he posted on Truth Social. "This deal, which is an “Economic Partnership,” will ensure the American people recoup the Tens of Billions of Dollars and Military Equipment sent to Ukraine, while also helping Ukraine’s economy grow as this Brutal and Savage War comes to an end."

A formal readout of the G7 meeting has yet to be issued.

Ukraine is sitting on massive reserves of critical rare earth minerals that could total trillions of dollars. It holds about 5% of the world’s total mineral resources, according to a 2024 World Economic Forum report.

Besides having one of the largest confirmed reserves of lithium, Ukraine boasts semiconductor-grade neon gas that is critical for chip production, beryllium, uranium, zirconium, apatite, iron ore, and manganese.

US National Security Adviser Mike Waltz, who has rejected Ukraine's entry into NATO, maintains that the US would in fact defend any economic investment it makes in Ukraine’s mineral resources.

"This could mean trillions, not only for the Ukrainian people, but for us and for stability for the region. And that economic investment is one of the best security guarantees that Ukraine could hope for," he said during a Monday morning interview with Fox News.

Trump said he is simultaneously in "serious discussions" with Russian President Vladimir Putin about drawing the war to an end, as well as what he described as "major Economic Development transactions which will take place between the United States and Russia."

"Talks are proceeding very well!" he asserted.

The first round of negotiations between the US and Russia concluded last Tuesday with the nations pledging to continue talks. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy protested his nation's exclusion, prompting a public war of words with Trump in which the US president accused him of being a "dictator" and falsely claimed it was Ukraine that began the war.

The initial push of what Russia calls a "special military operation" saw its forces close in on the Ukrainian capital before they were pushed back in fierce battles with Ukrainian forces.

Frontlines have shifted greatly over the past three years, with Russia establishing a firm foothold in the east where it had been propping up separatist forces since 2014, the same year it illegally annexed Ukraine's Crimean Peninsula.
