Trump says tariffs on Canada and Mexico ‘will go forward’

WASHINGTON

US President Donald Trump said Monday that tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico "will go forward" as a month-long pause ends next week.

"We're on time with the tariffs, and it seems like that's moving along very rapidly," Trump said when asked whether the postponed tariffs against the two key US partners would be stopped from taking effect, speaking at a joint press conference with his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron.

"We've been mistreated very badly by many countries, not just Canada and Mexico. We've been taken advantage of," he continued.

“The tariffs are going forward on time, on schedule,” he said. "This is an abuse that took place for many, many years. And I'm not even blaming the other countries that did this. I blame our leadership for allowing it to happen."

Trump's remarks come after he agreed on Feb. 3 to a 30-day pause on the tariffs as Canada and Mexico took steps to address his concerns over border security and drug trafficking.

Trump had initially announced the tariffs on Feb. 1, imposing a 25% additional tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico, citing the "extraordinary threat posed by illegal aliens and drugs."
