Trump to order US troops to border with Mexico to crack down on illegal immigration: Reports
El Paso, Texas border crossing shut down on inauguration day as president vows overhaul of immigration laws

US President Donald Trump will order federal troops to the border with Mexico to crack down on illegal immigration at the El Paso, Texas crossing, according to media reports Monday.
The El Paso port of entry was shut down within an hour of Trump's inauguration as the president declared a national emergency at the southern border.
"Crossing beyond this point will result in arrest, prosecution and possible application of force," The Texan newspaper reported hearing over loudspeakers at the El Paso border crossing just moments after Trump was sworn into office.
Trump is expected to sign 11 border-related executive orders that will take a hardline stance on illegal immigration, including one authorizing the deployment of US troops to the border to secure the port of entry, according to Fox News.
Another order will designate certain international cartels and crime organizations as terrorist groups, and an additional order will direct the Departments of Homeland Security and Defense to finish construction of the border wall that Trump began during his first term in office as well as deploying personnel to control the border.
As reported by Anadolu, US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) shut down the use of the CBP One application which was used to schedule immigration appointments. Nearly 270,000 migrants in Mexico were seeking scheduling, according to CBS News.
The CBP One app was launched in October 2020, and according to CBS, nearly 919,000 migrants have used it to enter the US since January 2023.
Trump has said that policies implemented during his first term, such as Remain in Mexico, which required asylum seekers to stay in Mexico until they were processed, will be reinstated. On the converse end, the president said that the current catch-and-release policy, in which illegal migrants are released while awaiting an immigration hearing, will be ended.
"All illegal entry will immediately be halted and we will begin the process of returning millions and millions of criminal aliens back to the places from which they came," said Trump during his inauguration speech.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, who surprised Trump by attending the president's post-inauguration speech on Capitol Hill, released a statement supporting Trump's crackdown on illegal immigration.
"Texas looks forward to working with President Trump and his administration to secure the border and build a brighter, more prosperous future for all Americans," said Abbott.
The governor added that Trump should begin "exercising the full scope of your authority... (to) secure the border in the face of federal obstruction."
