US President Donald Trump's tariffs on Canada and Mexico are an attempt to stop the bleeding in the American economy, United Auto Workers chief Shawn Fain has told ABC News.

"We're in a crisis mode in this country," implying that the US trade system is "broken" and requires significant change, Fain said on Sunday.

Tariffs "aren't the end solution ... but they are a huge factor in fixing this problem," he noted.

The US had lost millions of jobs since the North American Free Trade Agreement was established in 1994, he stressed.

"Tariffs are an attempt to stop the bleeding from the hemorrhaging of jobs in America for the last 33 years," Fain added.

He also noted that the US is the market where everyone wants to sell their products and that they should have reciprocal measures against the countries that impose tariffs on Washington.

The US had implemented 25% tariffs on auto-related products from Canada and Mexico last week.

Trump later has postponed the tariffs after talking with the two countries' leaders.
