US President Joe Biden's decision to withdraw from the Nov. 5 presidential election has shifted focus to the upcoming Democratic National Convention in Chicago next month, where the party's nominee will be determined. 

Following Biden's announcement, speculation has grown about potential candidates for the Democratic nomination, with Vice President Kamala Harris emerging as a strong contender.

However, several other prominent Democrats are also being considered for the nomination, which will be decided at the Democratic National Committee meeting from Aug. 19-22.

As the Democratic National Convention approaches, the party remains divided on its next steps. Key figures such as former President Barack Obama and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi have remained silent on their preferences, adding to the uncertainty surrounding the nomination.

Among the potential candidates receiving significant attention are Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, California Governor Gavin Newsom, US Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, and West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin.

The Democratic delegates, who largely supported Biden, will vote to select the new nominee if no clear candidate emerges before the convention.

Whitmer, who has led Michigan Democrats to significant legislative victories and implemented key policies on abortion rights and gun safety, has indicated her commitment to supporting the party and opposing former President Donald Trump. While she has not openly supported Harris, Whitmer's influence within the party is notable.

Newsom, known for his role as a prominent Democratic voice in conservative media and his debate with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, praised Biden's selflessness but has yet to endorse Harris.

Buttigieg, recognized for his effective communication skills and crisis management as transportation secretary, acknowledged Biden's historic presidency without committing to support Harris.

Shapiro, whose quick reconstruction of a collapsed bridge in Philadelphia earned him national acclaim, has not commented on the future of the nomination process following Biden's withdrawal.

Pritzker, a vocal critic of Trump and advocate for Democratic policies, has not yet made any statements regarding the nomination.

Manchin, who left the Democratic Party earlier this year and expressed interest in running as an independent, may also seek the nomination. His former communications advisor, Jonathan Kott, confirmed Manchin's serious consideration of the candidacy.

Other names mentioned as potential nominees include Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, Maryland Governor Wes Moore, and Senators Amy Klobuchar and Cory Booker. Georgia Senator Raphael Warnock has also been suggested as a possible candidate.

Recent polling by Reuters-IPSOS indicated that former first lady Michelle Obama is the only Democrat who could decisively defeat Trump. However, she has repeatedly stated she has no intention of running for president.

The outcome of the Democratic National Convention meeting will be crucial in determining the Democratic Party's strategy and candidate for the election, as the party seeks to unite behind a nominee capable of defeating Trump and leading the nation.
