US exchanges close mixed

ISTANBUL

Major stock exchanges in the US closed Thursday on a mixed note.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 219 points, or 0.54%, to end the day at 40,755. The S&P 500 lost 16 points, or 0.3%, to 5,503.

The Nasdaq, on the other hand, rose 43 points, or 0.25%, to 17,127.

The VIX volatility index, also known as the fear index, declined 6.6% to 19.90. The 10-year US Treasury yield fell 1.1% to 3.725%.

The dollar index decreased 0.29% to 101.06, while the euro remained flat at $1.1111 against the greenback.

Precious metals were on the rise, with gold adding 0.85% to $2,516 per ounce and silver increasing 2% to $28.82.

Oil prices were up around 0.1%, with global benchmark Brent crude at $72.89 a barrel and US benchmark West Texas Intermediate crude at $69.31.
