ISTANBUL
Robert Crimo III, who fatally shot seven people at Illinois Highland Park’s Independence Day parade in 2022, is scheduled to be sentenced Thursday after he pleaded guilty, according to ABC News.
The sentencing hearing began Wednesday but was extended into Thursday morning to allow more survivors and relatives of victims to address the court.
Crimo did not appear in court on Wednesday. His parents, who have been present for most court proceedings, were also absent.
Leah Sundheim, whose mother, Jacqueline Sundheim, was among those killed, told the court that the shooter “threw the balance of this world off” by taking her mother’s life.
She also read a statement from her father, Bruce Sundheim, who said their family was shattered by what he described as Crimo’s “violent tantrum.”
Another survivor, Marcia Moran, told the court her husband was shot during the attack and that she has spent over two years in therapy to cope with the trauma. “The shooter doesn’t get to take anything more from me,” she said.
