WASHINGTON

More than 30 House Democrats have urged President Donald Trump to lower egg prices and confront spread of avian flu.

"As members of the Congressional Dads Caucus, we write to demand immediate action from your administration to address the skyrocketing price of eggs," wrote the lawmakers, all of whom are members of the Congressional Dads Caucus, in a Thursday letter to Trump.

Eggs are a basic necessity for families in the districts, and the financial burden caused by these surging prices must be resolved, they added.

"Mr. President, you've promised the American people that you would lower grocery prices... We expect a prompt response outlining your administration's actions to lower egg prices, protect farmers, and prevent further strain on families," lawmakers said.

According to Bureau of Labor Statistics, egg prices hit a record high in January. The price tag for a dozen grade A, large eggs was $4.95.

"This was the largest increase in the eggs index since June 2015 and it accounted for about two thirds of the total monthly food at home increase," the bureau said on Wednesday.

Some grocery stores have limited egg sales amid nationwide shortage.

"Due to ongoing nationwide issues with the supply of eggs, as well as increased demand, we kindly ask you to limit your daily purchase of eggs to one dozen of any kind," a grocery wrote on empty shelves.

Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins said on Friday that "one of the key issues" facing all Americans is the price of food and grocery prices.

"My very first briefing in my office last night was on this particular issue, was on the avian bird flu," Rollins, who was sworn in less than 24 hours ago, told the reporters.

"We are looking at every possible scenario to ensure that we are doing everything we can in a safe, secure manner but also to ensure that Americans have the food that they need. ...We will be announcing more in the coming days," she added.
