WASHINGTON
The US House on Thursday voted mostly along party lines to censure Democratic Representative Jamaal Bowman for falsely pulling a fire alarm in a Capitol Hill office building last September.
The resolution, introduced by Republican Representative of Michigan Lisa McClain, cleared the House floor in a 214-191 vote. Three Democrats voted with Republicans to censure Bowman as four Democrats and one Republican voted "present".
Bowman, a Democratic lawmaker from New York, becomes the third Democrat censured by the US House this year. Republicans previously moved to censure Adam Schiff of California over Trump-era probes and Rashida Tlaib of Michigan over her criticism of Israel.
Bowman was caught on video falsely pulling a fire alarm in the Cannon House Office Building before a House vote to avert a government shutdown Sept. 30. Bowman pleaded guilty after he was hit with the misdemeanor charge of falsely triggering the fire alarm,
He agreed with prosecutors to write an apology to Capitol Police and pay a $1,000 fine.
“This is an insult to the people I was elected to represent,” Bowman said in response to the accusations when addressing the House on Wednesday evening.
“Instead of passing meaningful legislation, some Republicans are using this to waste our time and money and to make you forget about all of the rights they want to destroy," he added.
