US imposes sanctions Iranian, Russian entities for 2024 election interference
Russia, Iran targeted US' election process, institutions, sought to divide Americans, says official
WASHINGTON
The US imposed sanctions Tuesday on entities in Iran and Russia accusing them of attempting to interfere in the 2024 election.
The Treasury Department said the entities, a subsidiary of Iran's Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) and an organization affiliated with the Russian Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU), "aimed to stoke socio-political tensions and influence the U.S. electorate during the 2024 U.S. election."
"The Governments of Iran and Russia have targeted our election processes and institutions and sought to divide the American people through targeted disinformation campaigns," said Acting Under Secretary of the Treasury for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence Bradley T. Smith.
"The United States will remain vigilant against adversaries who would undermine our democracy," Smith added.
