US man rescued after 20 years of captivity, fundraiser collects over $100,000
32-year-old man was severely malnourished when authorities discovered him following house fire, say press reports

A crowdfunding campaign has raised over $100,000 to support a US man who was allegedly held captive in his home for more than 20 years, press reports said Wednesday.
His stepmother, Kimberly Sullivan, 56, was arrested last week on charges of imprisoning her stepson since he was 11 years old, according to ABC News.
Authorities said the man, 32, had suffered prolonged abuse, malnutrition, and severe neglect, lacking access to education and even medical care.
Officials reported that the man, who stands 1.75 meters (5 feet 9 inches) tall, weighed just 31 kilograms (68 pounds) when discovered, less than half a normal healthy weight of about 68 kg (150 lbs.).
The fundraiser, organized by Safe Haven of Greater Waterbury in the northeastern state of Connecticut, will help cover medical and dental care, counseling, housing, and legal expenses.
The nonprofit said a trust is being established for him.
More than 300 people had contributed as of Wednesday morning.
The case came to light on Feb. 17 when Waterbury police and firefighters responded to a house fire.
Sullivan was safely evacuated, but emergency responders had to assist her stepson, who suffered from smoke inhalation.
During the rescue, investigators noticed a room with exterior locks.
The victim later told police that he had been confined for two decades.
He admitted to starting the blaze, telling first responders: "I wanted my freedom."
Sullivan’s attorney, Ioannis Kaloidis, denied the allegations, claiming the victim’s late father was responsible for his upbringing.
“She did not restrain him in any way. She provided food. She provided shelter. She is blown away by these allegations,” he said.
