US: Pelosi calls for commission to probe Jan. 6 riot U.S. Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi

WASHINGTON

US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Monday called for a "9/11-type Commission" to investigate the deadly Capitol riot in January.

"Now, as always, security is the order of the day: the security of our country, the security of our Capitol, which is the temple of our democracy, and the security of our Members," said Pelosi in a letter to her Democratic colleagues.

She said the lawmakers should get to the truth of how the riot happened, calling for establishing "an outside, independent 9/11-type Commission" to investigate facts and causes related to the riot.

On Jan. 6, when Congress convened to certify Electoral votes of then-President-elect Joe Biden, a mob of former President Donald Trump's supporters stormed the Capitol building.

The ensuing clashes left five people dead. Two other law enforcement officers took their lives in the aftermath of the raid. Trump is accused of inciting deadly violence.
