ISTANBUL - The 17th International Istanbul Jazz Festival sponsored by the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (IKSV) began on Thursday.

Bulent Eczacibasi, the chairperson of executive board of IKSV, delivered a speech in the opening ceremony of the festival, saying that they aimed to support jazz in Turkey with several projects bringing together Turkish and European musicians.
The festival hosts renowned musicians like legendary jazz pianist and composer Chick Corea, unforgettable jazz vocalist Tony Bennett, the glamorous singer Grace Jones and Seal, he said.
The festival opened with a concert by "Istanbul Jazz Stars" featuring  Turkey's foremost jazz musicians Sibel Kose, Melis Sokmen, Feyza Eren, Imer Demirer and Neset Ruacan as soloists, and Cem Tuncer, Hakan Cimenot, Halil Ibrahim Isik, Engin Recepogullari, Cem Aksel with Erdal Akyol accompanying them.
This year's the International Istanbul Jazz Festival will spread into different venues all around the city like the Archaeology Museum, Hagia Eirene Museum, Istanbul Modern, IstinyePark, Salon, Sepetciler Quasr and The Marmara Esma Sultan along with Cemil Topuzlu Open Air Theatre.
One of the most famous pianists and composers of jazz music Chick Corea, and his Freedom Band will be on stage on Wednesday night, July 7, at the first Open Air concert of the festival. Chick Corea Freedom Band concert sponsored by WestLB AG will begin at 9:00 pm. Known for his crossover projects with which he bridges the gap between classical music and jazz, his contribution to bands such as Origin and Return to Forever, as well as his solo works, Chick Corea links the "free spirits of music" with Freedom Band.
16-time Grammy-winner artist will be accompanied by Kenny Garrett who is considered to be one of jazz's most competent saxophonists, known for his long-time collaboration with Miles Davis; a master of acoustic and electric bass, Christian McBride; and, turning 85 this year, eminent percussionist Roy Haynes, who has been inspiring and leading jazz with his improvisations and technique since 50 years.
A legend since the 50s, Bennett will be on stage in Istanbul for a concert  on Thursday night July 15.
