HISTORICAL SHIP RE-BUILT, ON JOURNEY FROM TURKEY TO FRANCE
IZMIR - A Turkish association has re-constructed a historical bireme ship, which is actually on its journey from Turkey to France.

In the 600 BC, one of the 12 Ionian cities in Western Anatolia, the Aegean, was Phokaia (Foca), which had had set up many colonies on the Mediterranean including Marseille.
The ship set sail from Urla town of the Aegean province of Izmir with 20 rowers, three yardmen, and 25 crew members on June 8, 2009 within the scope of "Izmir-Foca-Marseille/A Journey into History" project of the association.
The "Kybele" ship left behind the territorial waters of Greece, and reached Italy a month later it set sail from Turkey.
The crew will attend more than 400 cultural, economic and social activities, and several events to mark the "Year of Turkey" in France.

The "Kybele" ship is expected to return to Istanbul after the "Year of Turkey" activities in France by sailing on the River Danube, and to participate in the "2010 Istanbul the Cultural Capital" activities.
On the return trip from France on River Danube, the ship is to pass through Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia and Bulgaria and arrive at Constanta Port of Romania; then cross the Black Sea, and eventually reach Istanbul.
