SENIOR GENERAL ARRESTED ON COUP CHARGES
ISTANBUL - Gen. Bilgin Balanli, commander of Turkish War Academies, has been arrested in Balyoz (Sledgehammer) coup plot case.

An Istanbul court has ordered arrest of Balanli on Monday.
Balanli, a full general, has become the highest-ranking serving military officer arrested over alleged involvement in a 2003 coup plot, dubbed "Balyoz (Sledgehammer) Plan", to overthrow the government.
Balanli was arrested after a 3-hour court interrogation. He will later be sent to a prison in Istanbul where other serving and retired officers, charged with involvement in the alleged conspiracy, jailed earlier pending trial over the plot.
