NEW DELHI 

The Afghan foreign minister arrived in New Delhi on Monday for a three-day official visit to India.

The purpose of Mohammad Haneef Atmar's visit to India is to discuss bilateral relations, strengthening regional and international consensus on the Afghan peace process, and enhancing security, economic, political and cultural cooperation, the Afghan Embassy in India said in a statement.

"Arrived in beautiful & historic city of Delhi for a 3-day working visit. Look forward to holding talks with Foreign Minister Dr S Jaishankar & senior govt officials on Afghan Peace Process, upcoming regional forums on peace & development in, security & economic cooperation," tweeted Atmar upon his arrival.

Atmar’s visit has added significance in light of the US Biden administration’s fresh approach to the Taliban peace talks, which includes a larger role for New Delhi.

In addition to his Indian counterpart, Atmar is scheduled to meet with other top Indian officials, including National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, to discuss and exchange views on a range of issues of common interest to both countries.
