At least eight people were killed when a coal mine collapsed in Qinyuan Country in China's northern Shanxi province, according to officials Friday.
The Xinhua news agency reported that 38 other miners were trapped underground after the mine collapsed following a gas explosion that happened late Friday.
The report said 247 miners were confirmed on duty as 201 were brought safely to the surface early Saturday.
The cause of the gas explosion remains under investigation as rescue efforts continue.
Chinese President Xi Jinping demanded "proper handling of the aftermath of the accident," and demanded accountability.
