DHAKA, Bangladesh

Bangladesh's transitional government on Wednesday banned the student wing of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League party.

The Bangladesh Students’ League was banned under an anti-terrorism act with immediate effect, according to a gazette notification issued by the Home Ministry.

The League is accused of violent actions during student protests earlier this year that toppled Hasina's government and forced the over-15-year premier to flee to neighboring India on Aug. 5.

At least 775 people lost their lives, while over 22,000 were injured, during the protests, according to the country's Health Ministry.
